This property has been improved as the householder has become more aware of energy issues in particular by purchasing an electric vehicle, which will also be available to view, and installing solar panels on his property. These work together when energy generated from the solar panels is used to charge the car more cheaply and cleanly than when conventional fossil fuel energy is used. The owner is also actively involved in local community campaign groups such as Lets Get Energized and the Industrial Provident Society Energize Stur Valley set up to arrange community funding for renewable energy projects.
Electric vehicles will have the potential to add even more to the environmental credentials of our homes once smart metering and demand side management becomes more of a reality. One of the biggest issues on the way to a low carbon economy is the storage of intermittently generated renewable energy. Electric cars could be part of the answer if enough of us buy them and utilise smart charging to our benefit and that of the grid. Electric car batteries could feed power back to the house or the grid at times of high demand and high electricity cost and recharge themselves at periods of low demand and low electricity prices. This would save the owner money and make the grid much more resilient.
The garden is also being managed to be wildlife friendly by encouraging native species of flora in naturalistic ecosystems that are successfully bringing in animals. Rainwater harvesting ensures readily available irrigation without wasting mains water and reducing run off from the site during periods of rain.
