This 2008 property was built to good a good specification and has a 13kW wood burner which provides the main source of heat to the home as well as 4kW PV solar panels which were installed in July 2011. The output of these has increased year on year. The property also has an LPG condensing boiler and low energy LED lights or fluorescents throughout. Along with these features rainwater harvesting is undertaken with large capacity tanks providing water for wildlife ponds and car washing amongst other things. Additional water saving is achieved through lifestyle changes and both energy and water are saved by heating some water on the wood burner’s hot plate. The property has high rated white goods which are only run after consulting the PV monitor in their utility room.
In 2010 the owners added an extension to the house which provides a garden room and enhances passive heating.
The main motivation was financial as it greatly reduces running costs of house during retirement and reduces effect of changes in fuel prices etc.
Electricity bills have reduced more than anticipated with greater awareness of usage and making best use of PV during sunny days with help from the monitor in the utility room.
