The previous property on this site was purchased with the intention of building a new house incorporating as many ‘eco’ features as possible, as well as retaining much of the existing building in order to reduce waste.
Within this build, there were improvements to reduce energy demand and increase efficiency such as loft, floor, interior and exterior wall insulation, double glazing and the use of A-rated electrical appliances. The garden is also a highly productive source of vegetables.
16 PV solar panels on the roof also provide much of the electricity. The heat pump system at this property, which provides under floor and first floor heating and hot water, is to some degree a bespoke item, in which there is one small air source heat pump (ASHP) providing hot water and a combined system consisting of a 8kW ASHP and a log burning stove with a back boiler to provide central heating. A certain amount of caution was exercised in selecting the 8kW ASHP to avoid overheating and now the owners are considering upgrading the ASHP to a 12 kW design with a more flexible multistage capacity.
One of the really exciting developments at the moment is the way in which low carbon energy products are becoming “off the shelf”, tried and tested technology. For most people there will be a system on offer that has been installed many times before reducing the need to custom design equipment and risk teething problems. The Renewable Heat Incentive system, which covers the ASHPs is working well for the owners of this property as is the Feed-in Tariff system (FIT) for their solar photovoltaic (PV) panels.
