The house was an early adopter of solar panels and although initially expensive at £15,000 they have been very worthwhile generating a financial return of £2,000 per year from the Feed in Tariff and around £300 per year in electricity bill savings. The value of this return increases annually in line with retail inflation and when the system was first installed the electric meter ran backwards!
The property was built in 1982 and has also had replacement soffits (made from locally sourced green Douglas Fir), addition of porch and lean-to greenhouse (again built of Douglas Fir), and a log burner largely fuelled with wood sourced from the garden. This has greatly reduced the fuel consumption of the gas boiler.
One unusual improvement is that this house has a voltage optimizer which steps down voltage from the slightly variable 230V from the grid to an absolutely steady 220V. This saves money as you use less power and electrical appliances last longer as they receive a constant low voltage rather than a varied one. New kitchen LED lights which are brighter and use less energy than compact fluorescents have recently been installed. In the future it is hoped to add solar hot water.
